Dissolving Toxic Masculinity with Thomas B. Haller
Our society is riddled with men behaving badly. Sexual harassment, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and misogyny run rampant throughout society, government, the work place, and indeed every facet of life. In his book Dissolving Toxic Masculinity, psychotherapist, award-winning author, and child, adolescent and couples’ therapist, Thomas Haller, writes “the societal standards dictating that men be strong, unemotional, aggressive, and dominant over women have created toxic masculinity. These social standards have an influence on the development of our sons, and if we leave it up to someone else to teach them about masculinity, we greatly increase the potential for their growing up to be chauvinistic, misogynistic, bigoted men who believe they are none of those things.”
Topics will include:
• Why repeated use of the words “makes me” or “made me” has contributed to the rise of toxic masculinity
• How we can teach our boys to not be judgmental
• Why empathy deficits at home contribute to toxic masculinity and how we can change this
• Which myths about sex and sexuality that urgently need dispelling
• Consent – what constitutes it, what does not, and how to teach boys the difference… and more…
