Sundown on April 7th, 2021, marks the beginning of Holocaust Memorial Day, known in Hebrew as Yom HaShoa. It is observed as a day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews and five million others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by the Nazis. What many are not aware of is the Nazi slaughter of those with physical or mental disabilities in what they called the “T4” or “euthanasia” program, part of their maniacal attempt at racial purity.
My guest this week on Vox Novus, Sylvia True, has written a heartbreaking, compelling and revelatory novel, based upon her own family’s experience, that reflects the stigma associated with mental illness and the inherent danger in a culture that dehumanizes others. Sylvia True was born in England to parents who were refugees from Germany. She moved to the US when she was five. Growing up with parents from different cultures, a mother who was a Swiss champion figure skater, and a father who was a theoretical nuclear physicist gave her varied and unique perspectives. During her summer breaks, Sylvia likes to travel to the Amazon and do research in the rainforest. She has raised two daughters, who are both pursuing their passions. Presently, she lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two very spoiled dogs, where she is a high school chemistry teacher. Her first book was entitled The Wednesday Group and she joins me this week to discuss her latest book, Where Madness Lies.
