13 Great Benefits of Eating Avocado Seeds

Everyone knows about Avocados… but did you know that Avocado Seeds are full of great health benefits?

Avocado Seeds have more antioxidants than most fruits and veggies on the market and polyphenols like green tea; plus, they are full of more soluble fiber than just about any other food.

In fact, the seed has 70% of the antioxidants found in the whole Avocado, and Avocado Seed Oil is also full of antioxidants, lowers cholesterol, and helps fight off disease.   • In case anyone is interested: wisegeek suggests drying out the pit for several days by setting it on a windowsill, then cracking it into smaller bits w/a hammer or food prep mallet before placing into a blender.

    Looking forward to adding the seed to a smoothie, OT thanks for the suggestion.

  • Is there a way to tell if the seed is bad or should not be eaten? Like if you open up an avocado and realize that it is not ripe, or downright nasty, is the seed still okay? How long do the seeds last? Can they be saved, frozen, etc?… This article is fascinating, but can we have more info about the seeds?

  • The research on the alleged health benefits of avocado pits for human consumption is based on very small studies whereas the studies on the benefits of eating the fruit are far more plentiful.

  • I got an avocado tree that’s cold hardy, it can stand 11 degrees, the first one I got was a haas avocado and it froze the second year, mine is 2 years and it’s about 10 feet tall has avocados this year, I live close to houston. can’t wait for it to really start producing.

  • In Yorùbá land, we grind the seed to fine powdery form, to be added to drinks, pastry, desert or food. You can also swallow little portion with water.

  • What variety is the cold-resistant tree?
    By the way different varieties bear fruit at different times of the year. By planting several trees of the correct varieties for your area, you can have avocados all year long. The avocados don’t get ripe until you pick them (or they fall off the tree).

  • Throw the seed in one peace in the blender with your smoothie, easy as that 🙂 My favourite: Avocado w seed, lemon, apple, (raw egg, greek youghurt.)

  • I read the small article above but it NEVER addressed how to fix it. All it had were the benefits which can be found in other foods. I ground it in my Nija with the skin, which was probably a mistake. I put in an apple and lemon juice. I had to spit it out, it was SO BITTER. I guess I need to find a way to peel it first then try again. For now I will stick with oregano oil.

    1. Avocado pits aren’t poisonous to humans in small quantities, but they do contain a fungicidal toxin called persin that can harm domesticated animals. Persin is an oil-soluble compound found in the leaves, bark and pits of avocados.

    2. Some people have allergicreactions to avocado. There are two main forms of allergy: those with a
    tree-pollen allergy develop local symptoms in the mouth and throat shortly after eating avocado; the second, known as latex-fruit syndrome, is related to latex allergy and symptoms include generalized urticaria (hives), abdominal pain, and vomiting and can sometimes be life-threatening.

  • It said to first let it dry out in a bag and then beat it with a hammer…. then put it in a blender.

  • I saw a deaf lady explaining about avocado seed. She showed how she peeled the seed. Use your fingers to peel.

  • Avocado seeds can be kept frozen. Boiling the seed for 20 minutes will soften it to where you can eat the inside of the seed. It is kind of bitter but for the health benefits I can overlook that.

  • Be careful… Avocado seeds can cause nausea and may interfere with proper absorption of proteins. Ask your doctor, or do a bit of research.

  • the California Avocado Commission has this on their website:

    “The California Avocado Commission does not recommend consumption of the “pit” or seed of an avocado. The seed of an avocado contains elements that are not intended for human consumption.”

    So who decided it was healthy to eat them? Maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to believe every un-researched health article we see on the web.

  • i use a laser cut cheese grater .. mix it in almost everything i eat and it has no taste .. enjoy and stay healthy

  • If you cook it, you will kill most of its benefits. No different than apricot kernels.

  • Coffee grinders work great for grinding the seed. I cut the seed into several pieces before grinding it.

  • I think it may be the fact that they didn’t see page 2. It’s kind of difficult to notice it on a phone.

  • A lot of work. They are hard to chew on. I once ate a raw potato as an alternative to chain smoking a pack of non filtered cigarettes. I imagine this would be more difficult than doing either of those things.

  • This article is a two pager, with instructions on how to pulverize the seed. Easy to miss so no shame there. Dry, then smash inside a plastic bag, then blend in a strong blender. 🙂 Must try it.

  • as far as i know toy need to peel them
    i just did, an older one i had stored in the fridge and a new one (left out for a day the peel tends to dry and crack and is not hard to peel off)
    Then i ground them up and they turned bright orange, looks like paprika! Now I am not so sure i want to eat them 🙂
    Supposedly they can be added to baking as well as smoothies……….

  • Well unless you see in small print it says page 2 a person will only see the first page.. I almost missed it after reading everyone’s comments..

  • The avocado seed is bitter like a beer. If you can drink a beer with pleasure, why you can’t you do the same with the avocado seed? I eat the seed direct from the fruit usually with a pear or an apple.
