In an astral map, the planets’ position in the sky at a person’s date/time/location of birth represents personality traits.

Understanding the Importance of the Planets’ Location in Your Astral Map

Astrology, like the ancients’ knowledge about the different personality characteristics of human beings and their relationship with the solar system’s planets, has endeavored to study and compile observations accumulated over the ages. It was a primordial attempt to identify and understand the depth of people’s character and inclinations when science was still in its infancy.

Astrology strives to expose the stars’ influence on human beings and the events related to them, formulating laws through the frequency and permanence of specific planetary configurations.

Putting the historical perspective in analyzing this knowledge, we will summarize the planetary occurrences in the birth chart to express human beings’ specific personal characteristics.

In a birth chart, we find the planets positioned in the sky according to a person’s date and time of birth at this time. In the skies, the planets travel, particularly trajectories, measured in arcs, divided into degrees, minutes, and seconds. Each region of the sky has its own characteristics. It is important to know precisely the time of a person’s birth to accurately position the planets in their astrological study.

The Astrological “Planets” are:

Sun – represents vitality and ego. The Sun radiates light and strength, as the individual radiates his personality from his center or core. In the astrological chart, the Sun represents the essence of the center of our being, the will.

Moon – reflecting sunlight, the Moon is continuously changing. It represents the unconscious side of personality, instincts, and desires. While the Sun is a unit, the Moon is dual; it grows and decreases; it also symbolizes the double process of death and rebirth. The Moon is also used to determine the spectrum of our emotional states of being.

Mercury – the “winged messenger of the gods,” according to ancient mythologies, is a link between the Sun and the Moon. It corresponds to the vitality of a child who runs from side to side, communicating and exploring everything around him. Mercury shows how a person expresses his essence and how he classifies the effects that influence his senses. Mercury also gives us the background of how our thought process works.

Venus – expresses the desire for harmony, the sublimation of instinctual impulses in socially acceptable forms of relationship. The senses are governed by Venus and enable us to live on Earth surrounded by harmonious beauty. Venus on the map shows us the way we behave in our relationships and how we love others.

Mars – warrior and aggressor, represents impulsive passions and desires. While Venus expresses love, harmony, and spirit, Mars shows matter limited by matter. A well-positioned Mars on a map can give us strong will, resilience, and grit.

Jupiter – king of the gods, represents the principle of growth and expansion on Earth. It also expresses the social order, which determines behavior and morals. Jupiter confers the gift of prophecy and optimistic faith. It encourages us to look beyond the names and forms of things. Jupiter well-positioned gives good fortune and the ability to have powerful friends.

Saturn – also called Cronos, is the oldest god of the Greeks, the legislator. It represents the sense of perfect justice and the highest achievement; it solidifies and fixes energy, giving structure. However, Saturn can also be cold and constricting. It represents material responsibility, limitations, and self-discipline. Some astrologers consider Saturn the planet that carries and dispenses loads of Karma.

Uranus – is the planet that awakens humanity to a new era. Uranus orbit is the most eccentric of all the planets. Its rotation movement is different from all, as it rotates inclined around its own orbit. Uranus is rebellious and individualistic, portraying everything unconventional. Uranus invalidates old patterns and structures and governs the intuitive perception that appears in flashes.

Neptune – or Poseidon, the god of the sea. It flows in each individual with the potential to tune into cosmic consciousness and transcendent reality. Neptune takes love to the level of compassion and mysticism. Its upbeat vibe gives rise to music, poetry, and dance; its negative vibration causes individuals to escape reality through fantasy, drugs, and other illusions.

Pluto – the god of the underworld, stays half the time above the surface and the other half below it, thus perceiving the depths (or the subconscious). Pluto takes earth beings through the processes of death, rebirth, and purification, as well as through the changing seasons. When its strength explodes, it is like an erupting volcano.

Non-Planet “Planets”

Besides these “planets,” some asteroids are also found, deepening the understanding of individual characteristics.  Located between Mars and Jupiter, they provide additional information:

Ceres – or Demeter, was the Greeks’ great Mother Earth, goddess of grain and fertility. Its predominance in an astrological chart points to an individual’s inclination towards healing, expansion, and creative energies.

Vesta – or Hestia, the guardian goddess of the sacred fire, the symbol of protection. Indicates a person who works hard and has a strong sense of devotion and mysticism. Vesta is also a guardian goddess.

Juno – or Hera, goddess of marriage, governs the female cycle of reproduction. Juno sheds light on how connections and commitments work in someone’s life: whether we maintain our individuality or whether we get lost through the union.

Palas Athena – represents independence, involvement in social causes, and social justice, arts, and business.

Chiron – also indicates someone’s inclination towards healing. It is an important point on the map because it means self-sacrifices, rebirth, and transcendence.

Éris is the goddess of discord. The dwarf planet was called because its discovery launched conflict among astronomers over the definition of a planet and indirectly caused Pluto’s status to fall from “planet” to “dwarf planet.” In Greek mythology, it is famous for having indirectly caused the Trojan War.
