 About the Selected Books

“I love books. I never tire of the endlessly varied mental, emotional, inspirational, especially transformational journeys on which books take me. Choosing only ten from among my most transformational journeys was difficult. Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi was the easiest choice. It set me on a path I still walk fifty years later. There are scores of other books by or about Yogananda. I chose two that moved me particularly. A third, The Holy Science, was written by Yogananda’s teacher and included the mind-expanding core concepts of the world ages or yugas, about which I co-authored a book. I added books about Christian saints, a man who had a spiritual relationship with the first actor-dog, and the life story of a carnival strongman because they showed me that our spiritual unfolding, though universal, is also unique. (“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Oscar Wilde) The Tao of Physics first inspired me to write my book, The Physics of God. High-fantasy books are one of the few genres that, although they may be elves, give center stage to uplifting, self-sacrificing, and noble characters—and few fantasy books have better characters than The Lord of the Rings. Lastly, in case I end up on a desert island with only these books to read, I threw in P. G. Wodehouse for pure pleasure and a happy release of laughter, I threw in P. G. Wodehouse.”

Joseph Selbie Ten Most Inspiring Books

Autobiography of a Yogi1. Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda

Yogananda’s masterpiece has been named one of the twentieth century’s greatest and most influential books. Yogananda was the first yoga master of India whose mission brought him to live and teach in the West. His firsthand account of his life experiences in India includes childhood revelations, stories of his visits to saints and masters in India, and long-secret yoga and self-realization teachings that he first made available to the Western reader.

2. The New Path by Swami Kriyananda

The New Path tells the story of a young American’s spiritual quest, his discovery of the powerful classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, and his subsequent meeting with and acceptance as a disciple by the book’s author, the great spiritual teacher, and yoga master, Paramhansa Yogananda. The New Path provides a marvelous sequel to Paramhansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi, helping you gain a more profound understanding of this great world teacher.

The Flawless Mirror 3. The Flawless Mirror by Kamala Silva

Kamala Silva tells the deeply moving story of how she met and became a disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi. Kamala shares uplifting spiritual experiences she received and personal moments with her teacher.

Holy Science by Swami Sri Yukteswar4. The Holy Science by Swami Sri Yukteswar

“The purpose of this book is to show as clearly as possible that there is an essential unity in all religions; that there is no difference in the truths inculcated by the various faiths; that there is but one method by which the world, both external and internal, has evolved; and that there is but one Goal admitted by all scriptures.” -Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri. He also explains the cycle of the yugas.

7. The Spiritual Journey of Joseph L. Greenstein, The Mighty Atom by Ed Spielman.

The fascinating story of one of the world’s great strongmen. Though small in stature, he could bend horseshoes and steel bars. Though an entertainer, he experienced his demonstrations as opportunities for the extraordinary power of divine life force to flow through him. Every amazing feat was, for him, a spiritual experience.

It’s always good to laugh! Not everyone “gets” Wodehouse’s genteel lunacy. I love it.

I’m going to cheat. I find almost all NDE books inspiring! Especially Life After Life by Raymond Moody, Embraced by the Light by Betty Eadie, Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander, Dying to Be Me by Anita Moorjani, and Journey Through the Light and Back by Mellen-Thomas Benedict. The common theme of all these books that I find so inspiring is the universality of the direct experience of the heavens and the vastly expanded awareness of soul consciousness.
