Spooky season has arrived. It will extend well into next month and take us into deep introspection and rediscovery. Get out your lanterns, get out your flowing capes, and prepare to descend.
We’re exploring relationships, desires and intense connections, some of which have been underwraps, as well as secrets, crimes, betrayals and all manner of situations that generally stay in the shadows… and misunderstandings, miscommunications, lies and deceit.
Heavy stuff, all of it. And we feel passionately attached to a lot of it in ways that are hardly rational, and sometimes not even conscious. Prepare to explore how much – and to look at the aftermath, value and cost (not to mention gritty underbelly) of so much that’s happened since July.
The exploration comes from baton-passing retrogrades of Venus and Mercury, which dominate the month. Venus is first, beginning October 3 in early Scorpio, and Mercury follows in the same sign three weeks later.
Yet communication issues surface before either retrograde starts. Secrets, scandals and difficult conversations are forced out by squares to Mercury from Mars and Pluto October 2. The line-up forms a t-square pressurizing information and communication. Mars is approaching the degree that Jupiter occupied during July’s outer planet basket. It is activating next stages in its rewiring. Watch for back-room info that may not have been disclosed then.
No matter how unpleasant, disconcerting or frightening – and some will be all three – there’s no looking away. One reason is the activation Mars is triggering. Another is that we’re under cosmic imperative. Mercury is the focus of a yod or finger of God from Neptune and Uranus October 2-4. Shockers, disruption, revelations and behind-the-scenes dirt connected to July’s basket require attention.
And a third reason: what’s stirring now is coming back around. Clashes between Mercury and Mars bracket October. The planets slam into each other both at the beginning and at the end of the month. Make note of what surfaces now; you’ll learn more to the story later.
All of this is occurring in a slo-mo experience of reality, because it coincides with Venus floating into her retrograde station. Desires, relationships, money, creativity and values are growing intense and complex and will captivate us into next month. Venus is retrograde from October 3 to November 13, in Scorpio for the first three weeks and then retreating to her more socially proper base of Libra. Past attachments, loves, passions, betrayals and obsessions are thick in the air. Some are in ghostly form, some materialize physically, and all are inviting revisiting, addressing and perhaps resolving.

Frustration adds to the slowing pace when the Sun opposes Saturn October 4. Thoughts and conversation turn to what we truly, madly, deeply desire two days later, when Mercury and Venus get on the same page. Motivation flares to go after that, unabashedly and suddenly, as Mars crosses the degree Jupiter occupied during the basket. Additionally, Mars sextiles quick change artist Uranus October 7.
Information rearranges our relationship to authority – or being responsible requires an adjustment in thoughts and messaging (or, of course, both), when Mercury inconjuncts Saturn at the Libra New Moon October 9. The experiences of Venus’ retrograde travel so far have an impact on the alliances and agreements that launch or level up.
That journey also leads to demands for action. Venus tells Mars what she wants October 10 and challenges him to go get it already – not neatly or politely, either. What we want, and our sense of entitlement to it, are only growing (thank the Sun sextiling Jupiter October 15). So is the sense, with Pluto stationing direct, that there’s no time to lose. Like it or not, the future is upon us.
That action that was demanded gets somewhere. Efforts show progress, take shape and stabilize, with Mars trining Saturn October 16.
From that base, the Venus retrograde issues swirl back into view. A mix of surprising info, sudden plot twists, sparks of inspiration and infuriating lies make them unavoidable, as Uranus and Neptune form a yod pointing at Venus from October 16-21. More revelations and demands surface with Venus’ square to Pluto October 20. Some of these may be part of a longer story. Look back to September 15, when the pair first made a square. Also, keep whatever happens now in mind when the pair squares again December 9.
For now, a moment of clarity is in the stars, though it may be more a cellular knowing than intellectual. The Sun enters the Scorpio waters October 23 and quickly conjoins Venus. The experiences of her retrograde journey so far sear into our beings. We know what we want, deeply; we know the costs, deeply; we know what has been lost, deeply. The meeting carries a profound sense of finality, because it is their last during our lifetime. In fact, it is their last in the sign of Scorpio for even longer than that.
The effects sink in slowly. Time is, once again, crawling, the side effect of Mercury entering his own retrograde station October 24. He carries on the intense plumbing of Scorpionic issues while Venus slips back into her Libra home October 25. She will remain there until their joint direct station November 13.

With Mercury now retrograde as well, the past looms even larger in daily life, with ghosts and agreements and situations resurfacing at seemingly every turn. Everything feels high stakes and on the precipice. Research, investigations and therapy can go further than they might have previously. In addition, conversations can be uncommonly bold and air-clearing. Visualizing a hazmat suit could be a useful protection, though; a lot of what is coming out is sordid and messy.
Instead of blaming others (which will, of course, be happening in spades), looking at ourselves and our own roles is the way to go. “Show me another way to look at this,” “What does this say about me?” and “What could I do differently?” are helpful questions as the cosmic change agents Uranus and Pluto create a finger of God or yod pointing right at the Sun, October 25 and 26.
More Venus issues come to a head at the full moon she rules, in Taurus, October 25. Info from the retrograde journey, and from her fusing with the Sun October 23, informs the questions mushrooming now. What is the state of your resources? How comforting and stable do they feel? Who can you rely on? Who can you not?
As much as Taurus encourages loyalty and staying put, letting go is in vogue now. The Moon and Sun’s square to Pluto is cutting away much, and for good.
And not necessarily quietly. Mercury’s retrograde findings are entering the mix and leading to demands, confrontations and action. Mercury squares Mars October 30, pushing you to address miscommunications vigorously, as well as confront lies, also vigorously, and perhaps revisit demands and actions from the beginning of the month, when the two inner planets originally squared.
