Dr. Roberto Pinelli is an ophthalmologist, neuroscientist, researcher, and musician whose work brings together science, vision, and a deep understanding of human perception.
He is the Director of the Switzerland Eye Research Institute in Lugano, where his research explores innovative approaches to retinal health, with particular attention to using photons and nutraceuticals to support mitochondrial function and cellular vitality in retinopathies.
His background extends well beyond medicine. A trained pianist and conductor, Dr. Pinelli brings to his scientific work the same sensitivity to rhythm, precision, harmony, and interpretation that define music.
This unusual intersection of ophthalmology, neuroscience, cellular research, and the arts gives him a distinctive perspective on vision—not simply as a biological function, but as part of the complex relationship between the eye, the brain, energy, and human experience.
An Interview with Dr. Roberto Pinelli – Awakening the Pineal Gland
Today, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Roberto Pinelli to our interview.
OMTimes: Your book is titled Awakening the Pineal Gland. For readers unfamiliar with the pineal gland as the “third eye,” how would you describe the true function of this small organ in the body?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: The true function of this small organ is not limited to regulating our circadian rhythm, the natural cycle of day and night. The pineal gland receives information about light and darkness and uses it to help organize sleep, wakefulness, and many of the body’s internal rhythms. But I believe its role is even more fascinating and profound. It appears to sit at the intersection of biology and consciousness, which may help explain why ancient traditions described it as the “third eye.” In this sense, it can be understood as a window through which we begin to explore self-consciousness and our inner perception of reality.
OMTimes: You discuss light not just as illumination but as a form of biological information. What do the eyes communicate to the brain, and why is this important for sleep, energy, mood, and consciousness?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: The retinas do much more than create the images we see. They also receive light and send this information to central areas of the brain that regulate the body’s internal clock. I think of light as a kind of informational food— it tells the brain when to be awake, when to prepare for sleep, and how to coordinate energy, mood, and hormonal rhythms. Light also influences the mitochondria, the tiny structures inside our cells that help produce energy. When this natural exchange of information is disrupted, our sleep, vitality, emotional balance, and even our sense of clarity can be affected.
OMTimes: As an ophthalmologist and neuroscientist, what first led you to look beyond vision and explore the deeper relationship between the eyes, the pineal gland, and whole-body wellbeing?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: Ophthalmology is an inalienable part of neurology because the eyes are not separate from the brain; they are a direct extension of it. As an ophthalmologist, I was trained to examine vision, but as a neuroscientist I wanted to understand the larger system: how the eyes receive light, how the brain interprets it, and how the pineal gland may respond. The pineal gland’s location deep within the brain, close to the pathways and fluids that support the central nervous system, made it especially compelling to me. This led me to explore how the eyes, the pineal area, and the wellbeing of the entire body may be connected.
OMTimes: Ancient traditions linked the pineal gland to inner vision, higher consciousness, and the soul. What insights do you think the ancients had about light, sound, and the human body that modern science is only now starting to reexamine?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: The intuition of the ancient civilizations remains partly obscure to us. We do not fully know how the Egyptians, Sumerians, Iranians, and other cultures arrived at such sophisticated ideas about the relationship between light, sound, the body, and consciousness. Yet their symbols, architecture, rituals, and healing traditions suggest that they observed nature and human beings with extraordinary attention. Modern science represents only a small period of time when compared with these millennial cultures. We should not accept every ancient belief without question, but neither should we dismiss the possibility that some of their insights are now being reexamined through neuroscience, chronobiology, and the study of vibration.
OMTimes: Your work features the Eye of Horus, Sumerian pinecone imagery, solar symbolism, and the third eye concept. Why do you believe many cultures associate light with wisdom, healing, and spiritual awakening?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: The third eye, or Eye of Horus, takes an organ we normally associate with seeing the external world and gives it a deeper meaning. I interpret this symbol as a kind of stargate toward inner vision: a way of receiving and absorbing the message of light, not only as illumination but as information. Plants transform light into life, and the human body also responds continually to the signals carried by light. Across cultures, light naturally became a symbol of knowledge, healing, and awakening because it allows us to see outwardly while also representing the possibility of seeing more clearly within ourselves.
OMTimes: Can you explain the Pinelli Protocol?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: The Pinelli Protocol is my approach to stimulating the brain and pineal gland through carefully selected wavelengths of light, measured in nanometers, together with extremely low-frequency sound and vibration delivered through the eyes and ears. The idea is that the pineal gland and surrounding neural pathways may respond to both photic and vibrational signals. By combining these frequencies in a controlled, individualized way, the protocol is intended to support relaxation, internal balance, and altered states of awareness, while influencing substances associated with mood, sleep, and wellbeing, including endorphins, serotonin, melatonin, pinealin, and DMT. It brings together my work in ophthalmology, neuroscience, and music in one therapeutic experience.
OMTimes: You are also a trained musician and conductor at a high level. How has music shaped the way you think about vibration, resonance, healing, and the body’s hidden rhythms?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: Music was my first language and my first way of communicating with the world. Through music, I learned that vibration is not an abstract idea; it can change breathing, heart rate, attention, memory, and the quality of our emotions. The rhythm of music enters into dialogue with the rhythms already present in the body. After many years in a musical career, I decided to become a doctor and ophthalmologist because I wanted to study light and sound together. For me, they are two forms of vibration and information that can influence how we feel, how we perceive, and how the body seeks balance.
OMTimes: October is a time when the days grow shorter. Many people begin to feel the effects of reduced light. What should we understand about the relationship between daylight, darkness, melatonin, and the body’s inner clock?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: October does not bring the same change of light to every part of the planet. Near the Equator, day and night remain relatively balanced throughout the year, creating a more consistent natural signal for the body and the pineal gland. In northern regions, however, autumn brings shorter days, while Arctic and Antarctic areas can experience months with very little sunlight. This reduction in daylight can disrupt circadian rhythms and contribute to seasonal depression in susceptible people. The lesson is simple but important: daylight helps regulate melatonin, sleep, energy, and emotional balance, while darkness has its own essential role in signaling that it is time for the body to rest and restore itself.
OMTimes: In a world increasingly dominated by screens, artificial light, stress, and disconnection from nature, what do you believe we have lost in our relationship with natural light?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: We have lost much of the nutritional and informational message of sunlight. Many people now spend their days indoors, looking at screens under artificial lighting, then remain exposed to bright light late into the evening when the body needs darkness. Technology is useful, but this pattern can separate us from the natural alternation of day and night that has guided human biology for thousands of years. Stress and disconnection from nature deepen this imbalance. To favor longevity and a better quality of life, we must reconsider how we use screens, seek appropriate natural light during the day, protect darkness at night, and restore a more conscious relationship with the pineal gland and the rhythms of nature.
OMTimes: What does “awakening” the pineal gland mean to you? Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually?
What kind of transformation do you hope readers experience after reading the book?
Dr. Roberto Pinelli: To me, awakening the pineal gland means becoming more receptive to the natural signals of light, darkness, sound, and vibration that continually shape the body and mind. Physically, it is about restoring healthier rhythms of sleep, energy, and internal balance; emotionally, it may bring greater calm, clarity, and openness; spiritually, it can encourage a deeper awareness of oneself and one’s connection to life. In Lugano, we see patients leave the consultation and treatment feeling emotionally and spiritually different, often with a renewed perception of themselves. My hope is that readers will experience a similar transformation through the book: not by accepting every idea blindly, but by observing more carefully, asking new questions, and discovering their own inner light.
