Ayurveda: What’s your Dosha?
By Deborah Caruana
Ayurveda is India’s ancient mind/body healing medicine for promoting health and longevity.
According to its teachings our constitution is comprised of 3 doshas, which reflect our physiology, comprised of 5 dynamic elements (air, fire, ether, water, earth). The varied levels of each element signifies what your predominant dosha is. Health exists when there is a balance between the three doshas. The 3 Doshas that describe your mind body type are named: Vata (Air + Ether), Pitta (Fire + Water) and Kapha (Earth + Water).
These doshas are your door to insights and self-discovery. Once you discover your dominant dosha you can begin to balance yourself through your dosha appropriate yoga practice, diet, and lifestyle choices.
…..Let’s discover your Dosha and begin your journey to balance and align your mind and body! I’ve described dosha traits according to dominant traits reflected through your yoga practice, to help you define your ayurvedic practice needs.
So lets explore What your Dosha is?
Type A+ Pitta: Transformation and Metabolism! You like getting A’s and being the best! You seek ‘challenge’ from asana and even more so for your personal evolution. You have a tendency toward irritability and anger when out of balance. You are inquisitive and driven and want to learn all the ‘tricks’ to making your practice impressive. You are motivated by philosophy and spirituality – you want to know and study everything and be your best as well as the best at in your practice and everything you do! Your primary elements are Fire and Water. Type Be Vata: Movement and Change! You are more sensitive, creative and ever changing in your yoga practice needs. With a tendency to anxiety and worry when out of balance, finding ease and relaxation in your challenging practice is a key. What helps you stay grounded is to focus on feeling oneness, being fully present as your practice grounds you.
You also need to sweat, tone, sculpt and even cardiovascularize! You want an advanced practice not to be the best but, because the challenge soothes your anxiety and worry. You love to work on all your favourite advanced poses. Your primary elements are Air and Ether. Type Z Kapha: Structure and Fluidity! You are naturally more relaxed and calm, with a tendency to lethargy and laziness when out of balance. You have excellent logical analytic tendencies in your approach to yoga which is more holistic and balanced.
You prefer to focus on the breathing, meditation, the philosophy and spirituality over the asana. You look deeply into your samskaras seeing them as the path to transcending your karma. Your primary elements are Water and Earth.
