Artist, award-winning author and teacher Cat Bennett has created not only a beautiful hands-on guide to starting a drawing club but also an inspirational program to help artists of all kinds build their skills and find their own genius. In The Drawing Club of Improbable Dreams: Artists Exploring Art Together, Cat Bennett describes how to set up a drawing club in your local community similar to The Saturday Morning Drawing Club that she currently runs in her hometown of Boston, MA. The goal is to provide a space where artists can support other artists in exploration, creation and experimentation that is the artists’ journey. The club is a place where members can make art experiments, mistakes, be free of limitations and learn from one another.

Based on her vast experience not only as a successful artist but as the leader of her own club Bennett has developed three 8-week session plans that contain specific art explorations that work from the inside out to help build skills and the curiosity, courage and critical thinking all artist need to make fresh, vital and authentic art.

As Bennett points out all artists, “dream that art matters, even that it might change the world. Improbable dreams but, in a club, things start to happen that we didn’t imagine possible.”

 In a drawing club, artists can work together to discover strengths that may have gone unnoticed when working alone and the realm of improbable dreams is where artists’ hearts are truly meant to be.

Cat Bennett is an artist who has taught drawing to adults for ten years in her Saturday Morning Drawing Club. Even those who came to the club having not drawn since childhood have gone on to make, exhibit and sell art, some in galleries, shops and museum shop settings. Cat was previously an illustrator for 25 years.
