The Metaphysics of Social Media

By Cristina Smith

The ultimate metaphysical secret, if we dare state it so simply, is that there are no boundaries in the universe. Boundaries are illusions, products not of reality but of the way we map and edit reality. And while it is fine to map out the territory, it is fatal to confuse the two. ~Ken Wilber

Did you know the social networking recently surpassed pornography as the top activity on the internet? That there are more social networking accounts than there are people in the world? Social media is not just a fad, it is a revolution that transformed the way people connect and interact. It is a category of websites that is based on user participation and user-generated content and includes networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Healing Humanity plus any sites like Yelp and You Tube that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other.

According to a poll I recently conducted on Facebook which asked what the biggest benefit you receive from being on Facebook, the top reason (56%) was to stay in touch with people you have met personally- family, friends and professional contacts. 22% of people said the biggest benefit was to meet like-minded people they would not have otherwise met, 18% reconnecting with people from their past, 3% escapism and 1% are there for idea and information exchange.

One of the key issues social networking brings up is that our public and private lives are blurring. When you create a profile, you are creating an avatar in a separate reality. What do you want? We each have a choice as to what we keep private and what we reveal publicly. For example some people talk about their hobbies and kids on online, others don’t. Whatever you decide, make sure you do so with intention. It is important to stay aware that anything you ever post on the Internet or email is there forever. There are privacy settings on the websites that help protect your information and I urge you to use them, however the best way to assure that a tidbit about you is secure is to keep it private.

When social networking, we are shifting our consciousness from the physical plane to the separate reality of cyberspace. You shift your energy from this world to that and you can actually end up being in two places at once. My brother travels frequently and told me that in the men’s room at airports, 85% of the guys in there are talking on their phones while doing their business. That’s quite a way to intentionally shift your consciousness outside of your physical vehicle!

A benefit I have received and have heard confirmation from others is that you can go back and heal the past through social networking. I reconnected with a dear friend with whom I hadn’t seen due to a miscommunication and changes in both our lives. After a few emails, the situation that catalyzed our parting was brought up and we were both able to talk about what went wrong. A few weeks later we had a delightful two-hour lunch and are thrilled to be reunited. Before social networking, such a healing was possible though not nearly so likely.

Metaphysically speaking, social networking offers us opportunities to experience ourselves in different ways. We can work both in a magickal and mystical manner. The magickal manner is the outer world approach in which we go out and directly manifest things. For example, if you want to reconnect with the girl you sat next to in 3rd grade or follow your favorite artist, you can do so easily. On the mystical, internal side of your being, you can think about something and watch a post appear on your page or learn more about yourself by corresponding with a like minded person halfway around the globe you will likely not meet face to face this lifetime.

On a broader scale, social networking can assist you in doing your Great Work, whatever that is. It creates a space in the local, regional, national and international communities to help you fulfill your mission. Social networking has really made manifesting your own destiny an equal opportunity for all.

I feel that social networking is a wonderful vehicle for facilitating personal and planetary healing. At least once a week I read of someone asking for prayer/healing energy for a loved one. This is a big energetic addition to traditional prayer groups that can really boost the effectiveness of distance healing. On a global scale, I have experienced the power of the connected community and participated in planetary practices. When Dr. Masuro Emoto asked people to join together to pray to heal the Fukushima water to help abate nuclear disaster, within 48 hours there were at least 100,000 people participating.

In these unstable times of global change, we have the choice of how we participate in the societal shift. We can use the amazing tool of social networking to, in Gandhi’s words, be the change we want to see and directly impact the outcome of these interesting times.  With compassion, intention and awareness we can help bring into being a more enlightened society.
