An Interview with Dr. Bernie Siegel
OMTimes had a conversation with Dr. Bernie Siegel about His new books and perceptions about Past Lives, their influences, and many insights.
OMTimes: What inspired you to write Three Men, Six Lives?
Bernie Siegel: When a friend asked me over the phone, “Why are you living this life?” I had a completely unexpected past life experience. I saw myself with a sword killing people and animals. I realized how those events changed my present life and my choices. In this life, I save lives with a knife like a surgeon. My past life experience also taught me about my faith in my Lord being a vital factor in my choices in this life and my past life. The word Lord was a key issue when I went to Jungian therapist James Hillman for help to deal with my emotions. “Bernie, you keep saying, my Lord. It is more than the Lord of your castle; it is your Lord. Go home and relive this,” he shared.
OMTimes: Do you believe our past lives influence our experience in this life?
Bernie Siegel: Our past lives can give us insights into why we are who we are. They influence our consciousness, and as my friend, Kubler-Ross, used to say to me, “Bernie, there are no coincidences.” For Jung, it was “The future is unconsciously prepared long in advance and therefore, can be guessed by clairvoyants.” Also, dreams and drawings can tell us more than words and intellect because they speak from the wisdom and knowledge of our consciousness.
OMTimes: Tell us about the main characters Jon, George, and Carmine. Which character is most like you?
Bernie Siegel: I am George, the surgeon. He is living my experience. In a past life, I killed the woman who was my wife in this life. The grief was incredible for me, but it also led to me understand why my wife’s face had such power over me and my deep feelings and love for her. Our marriage healed the families who were in conflict in our past life.
OMTimes: Do you believe love transcends lifetimes?
Bernie Siegel: Yes, love transcends lifetimes. Every meaningful author lets us know that love is immortal and makes all things immortal. It is the part of us that stays forever.
