The Astronomical Calendar 2021 is the cataloging of all Astronomical and Astrological events to take place on our skies during the well-awaited year 2021. Use this Eye On The Sky for keeping track.

Astronomical Calendar 2021

Four eclipses and three supermoons are forecast and included on the 2021 astronomical calendar.

Last year gave us a beautiful show in the sky with several meteor showers, one unique conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn that has not happened in 500 years, Powerful Solar Flares, and beautiful supermoons. But 2021 will not be left behind in beauty and excitement.

With an intense calendar, this year begins with a meteor shower today, January 3. Three supermoons and some conjunctions of planets also mark our calendar.

The contemplation of celestial things will make a man both speak and think more sublimely and magnificently when he descends to human affairs.

Eye in the Sky: Eclipses

We have four eclipses that will be occurring this year, only two will be seen partially in Latin America. Among these, the total lunar eclipse of May 26 and the partial lunar eclipse of November 19.

We know that a  solar eclipse usually happens when the Moon is placed precisely between the Sun and the Earth. The position forms a shadow that falls on a region of the planet. The “annular” phenomenon occurs when the Moon cannot fully cover the sunlight, forming a ring of light on its surroundings.

On the other hand, Lunar eclipses happen when the Moon is covered totally or partially by the Earth’s shadow. This phenomenon may be seen with the naked eye.

05/26 – Total lunar eclipse

10/06 – Annular eclipse of the Sun

19/11 – partial lunar eclipse

04/12 – Total solar eclipse

Eye in the Sky: Supermoons

The phenomenon happens when our star, the Moon, is simultaneously in the full phase and at the closest possible angle to the Earth, called the perigee. The Moon’s orbit on Earth is not a circumference, but a little flatter, so it passes through more distant and closer points on its route.

08/04 – Super Moon “Pink”

05/26 – Super Moon “Lotus”(Wesak Festival)

06/24 – Super Moon “Strawberry”

Eye in the Sky: Meteor Showers

Meteor showers are already a classic and widespread event. They appear when in the orbit of our planet around the Sun, we cross a region that a comet has already passed.

These celestial bodies leave a trail of debris behind, which may be ice, dust, stones, and other particles. Upon entering our atmosphere, they create the phenomenon we call shooting stars. This year there will be a “storm” of shooting stars in the sky. Check the dates:

01/02-03 – Quadrantids

04 /22-23 – Lyrids

05 /6-7- Eta Aquarids

07 /28-29- Delta Aquarids

08 /12-13- Perseids

10 /07- Draconids

10/21-22 – Orionids

11 /4-5 – Southern Taurids

11 /17-18- Leonids

12/13-14 – Geminid

12/21-22 – Ursidae

Eye in the Sky: Planetary Oppositions

An “opposition” in astronomy means that two stars are at opposite points when looking from Earth. A 180-degree line is formed in which one end is the Sun, in the center, the Earth, and at the other end, another star.

Aligned, the distance between the Sun, the Earth, and the third star is the shortest possible. This facilitates the observation of the star in the sky. This year four planets will be in opposition: Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter, and Uranus.

8/2 – Opposition with Saturn

Eye in the Sky: The conjunction of Planets

Unlike “oppositions,” the celestial bodies appear to be very close when looking from Earth in conjunctions. The impression is only in our visualization since, in practice, there are miles of distance between them.

2021 will still have a quadruple formation: Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn will be in almost perfect alignment. The crescent moon will be the fourth element in the sky.

9 and 10th of March: – Quadruple conjunction between Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Moon

July 12th- Conjunction between Mars and Venus

August 18th- Conjunction between Mars and Mercury

Eye in the Sky: Space Exploration

The man still has much to explore in space, and this year will mark the launch and completion of some orbiting missions. In February, the Chinese probe Tianwen-1 arrives in the Utopia Planitia region on Mars.

2/18 – NASA’s Perseverance probe arrives at the crater de Jezero on Mars.

7/22 – Launch of NASA’s DART mission to deflect the asteroids Didymos and Dimorphous

10/16 – NASA’s “Lucy” launch to explore various Trojan asteroids in Jupiter’s orbit
