5 Emotions that Cause Disease

disease

In the Eastern tradition, when we talk about Healing, three different disease-causing instances are taken into account.  They have categorized and named them as the external factors, the internal ones, and the mixed ones. The external factors refer to the six harmful climatic influences (so-called energies such as Wind, Cold, Heat, Moisture, Dryness, and Fire). Mixed factors refer to our lifestyle (nutrition, occupation, physical activity, relationships, trauma, parasites, etc.). And the most important ones, the internal factors, interest us most in this article: They are the Five Emotions that Cause Disease, which can make us extremely ill if not guarded and controlled.

Learning about the Five Emotions that Cause Disease

The Five Emotions that Cause Disease identified by Eastern Medicine and Healers as important internal factors that trigger illness are Joy, Anger, Worry, Sadness, and Fear.

They affect the harmonious functions of the Organs and Viscera, the consequent formation of Pure Substances, and their transport through the Channels of Energy to all parts of the body. Thus, they are responsible for integrating and harmonizing man’s Yin-Yang balance.

As they represent the modifications of the Spirit in reaction to the perception of messages transmitted by the environment, we must say that the Emotions are not pathogenic in themselves or when the energetic framework does not provide conditions for imbalance.

However, following brutal, extreme, violent, or very prolonged stress, these Emotions, according to their nature, act in the opposite way on the circulation of energy, delaying, obstructing, or even producing excesses or deficiencies.

Emotions and their Influence on Energy Flow and Disease

The first effect of emotional stress is to affect circulation and the proper direction of Qi (Energy), with each emotion having a particular effect.

About Anger

Anger (resentment, irritation, fury, indignation, bitterness): aggressiveness is necessary for human survival and adaptation, driving construction and growth.

On the other hand, anger is an extreme manifestation of aggression that, instead of helping, leads to internal disharmony.

Anger causes the Qi to rise or go against the current (flow of energy). Various symptoms and signs will appear in the body and organs.

About Joy

Joy (excessive excitement, anxiety, mania, excessive mental stimulation). The meaning of Joy as a cause of illness is obviously not a state of healthy contentment. Rather it is a state of excessive and anxious excitement that can generate palpitations, insomnia, restlessness, etc. In addition, joy sometimes consumes excessively and disperses the Qi in a disorganized way.

About Worry

Obsessive thinking (worry): Fixed thoughts lead to obsession, rigid rules, and loss of flexibility.

Worry arrests and stagnates the Qi circulation.

Symptoms and signs will vary depending on the organ affected.

The same energy that gives us the ability to meditate and contemplate will, if excessive and misguided, generate focused, negative and constant “grinding” thoughts.

 About Sadness

Sadness (grief, pain, grief, melancholy): it is an emotion that allows you to get in touch with yourself. It elaborates on the impermanence and mutation that are inherent in life and should not be considered abnormal.

But the Deep sadness, prolonged or disconnected from reality, is problematic and can lead to a depressive state. It depletes and makes the Qi deficient, resulting in decreased breathing and the fall of the energy flow as a whole.

About Fear

Fear (anxiety, fright, terror, panic): it is considered the basic emotion. It is necessary because it helps men identify dangers and adapt correctly to situations.

It moderates impulsiveness, increasing the time between intention and action. However, in situations of excess fear paralyzes and makes the Qi go down. It makes the person insecure, dependent, and unable to achieve long-term goals.

Balancing The Mind, Harmonizing Emotions

The harmony of the functions of the Organs and Viscera (The soft internal organs of the body, especially those contained within the abdominal and thoracic cavities) and the Five Emotions linked to them provide man with the ability to respond to the environment in a balanced way.

We must not confuse our mental and spiritual life with our emotional life. It is perfectly possible to be active and excited without being overwhelmed by excessive emotions that disturb the mind and that can, at a certain time, result in disease and illnesses that will materialize on the physical level as well.
