Laughter Really Is the Best Medicine

by Ginger McBride

We are constantly hustling and bustling without pause. We are on from one task to the next and rarely take a beat or a breath for ourselves. It can seem like there is hardly a moment for self-care when things are moving fast. Our stress levels rise, and we can feel our minds and bodies take effect. The road to self-care has many routes. One is to bring laughter back into our daily lives. This may not be the first idea that comes to mind as part of a self-care regimen. Things like dieting, fitness, and nutrition are more likely to have come to our minds than having a good laugh. However, laughter brings many benefits to our emotional, mental, and physical health. Learn how the power of laughter can nourish our emotional, mental, and physical health while fueling our self-care in our busy lives!

Through laughter, we can see positive changes in our minds and bodies. It triggers positive responses in our mental and physical health. When we laugh, for instance, it automatically relaxes our minds. When we relax our minds, our bodies tend to follow the same suit. When we laugh, we take in that oxygen-rich air that stimulates our heart, lungs, and muscles. Our brains release endorphins, which create an environment for a more relaxed and happier mind. Physically speaking, it decreases our stress hormones and increases our immune responses, including our anti-bodies that fight disease and infection. Our thoughts and experiences become our chemical reactions. Stress can be received as cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, or our joy can release endorphins leaving us feeling a happier mental state.

Laughter can even help us in our relationships and communities. It can strengthen our bonds with one another. It helps us spread light when there is darkness around. If we can learn to make light of a situation and always strive to find the silver lining, we will be better for it.

There is a multitude of ways to bring humor into our daily lives and bring forth the healing we need. First, we can learn to laugh at a daunting situation by taking a step back and finding the positive elements that we can focus on. Whatever we focus on only becomes bigger. Finding those aspects is essential. What if we made a mistake somewhere along the way? We are human. We are going to err at times. We can learn to laugh at ourselves, find the lesson at the moment and keep striving for better outcomes. On other days, we can surround ourselves with like-minded people who bring humor into the conversation. These people are the true gems in our circle. They help us see the big picture and keep us going. Lastly, we can partake in comedic entertainment, whether this is standup comedy, comedic sitcom, hilarious podcast, etc. We can proactively seek out the things that will boost our mood into a positive perspective.

Once we establish our own unique way of finding humor, we can use that as a tool for better living. We can use humor to improve our existence and quality of life. At the same time, there isn’t any doubt that hard work is an invaluable trait. However, if we don’t learn to rest, recharge, and take a pause when we need it the most, that same quality of effort can wane. It is a common expression that we cannot pour from an empty cup, and recognizing when this cup is running low is a key indicator of when self-care needs to begin. We must find our equilibrium between our workmanship, ambition, and energy versus the time to laugh, pause, recharge and enjoy this life that we are living.
