A Spiritual View of Collective Responsibility

collective responsibility

Collective responsibility is the sacred recognition that no soul walks alone, and that our spiritual evolution is measured not by our private devotions, but by our willingness to share the burdens of those who suffer beside us.

A Spiritual View of Collective Responsibility

What would be the importance of social movements and a way of thinking directed toward the collective good? From the very beginning, however, it is important to say that the idea of common well-being goes beyond any political ideology.

Political orientation is not the focus of this article. We will approach the subject in a broad, nonpartisan way from a spiritual perspective. I repeat, you will not find here any defense of any specific party-political ideology.

With that said, let us begin by thinking about inequality in the world.

True Spirituality Cannot Ignore Poverty, Justice, and Human Suffering

Some people live in deep poverty, while others are very, very wealthy. This does not mean we should criminalize wealth. Money, in most cases, can be the fruit of honest work. It is also a neutral energy, one that can be used for good or for harm. When money comes from honest work, it can bring comfort, knowledge, opportunity, and even save lives.

Yet because we live in society, ideas such as compassion, empathy, and charity support the common good and meet the minimum requirements of spirituality. Is this not what Jesus taught us? To practice charity?

“Charity is a spiritual exercise… Whoever practices goodness sets the forces of the soul in motion.”

Divine Will and Charity: Collective Responsibility

Some people interpret poverty as a lack of effort or as divine will. In doing so, they excuse themselves from using the power we all have to ease the suffering of those who have no resources, sometimes not even their daily bread.

“God placed them in that situation because it is His will,” some say. Or “They are poor because they deserved it and are paying off karma.”

Sadly, this is the kind of thought many people have when a person approaches their car at a traffic light. They quickly roll up the window and look away, as if avoiding the sight would make that child disappear.

They prefer to ignore rather than help. Some justify this by saying, “We do not know what they will do with the money.” But that is not a sufficient reason to avoid doing our part.

What that person will do with the few coins we are blessed enough to offer should not be our greatest concern. Each person answers for themselves before divine judgment.

So, what is our part? What are we called to do?

The word charity says everything. Help those in need. Do good without asking who deserves it.

One way to think about the world’s misery is to imagine that God allows it so that all of us may grow through it. If the person living in poverty is redeeming karma or fulfilling a divine purpose, then surely it is also part of God’s will that humanity (the children of God) learn to share, divide, and bring empathy into the heart.

Outside Charity, there is No Salvation

Helping others awakens our own consciousness.

When we help others, we help ourselves. While practicing Collective Responsibility, we give up the selfishness attached to what we possess, and we dismantle the ego that loves to judge. Nonjudgment, together with charity, is also a universal divine principle.

It matters little why a person finds themselves in such a painful situation. What we can do is be grateful for the lesson they bring us.

First, we can be grateful for what we have, because even when we achieve things through effort, everything is still subject to divine permission and providence.

Second, we can be grateful that we have something to offer. Otherwise, we might be in that same situation. You will need Divine grace even to help others.

Finally, we can become aware of the exercise in detachment that happens when we give without judgment. Poverty is a lesson for those who experience it, but it is also a great lesson for those who have been spared from it and are in a position to share.

“I know who belongs to God not by the way they speak of God, but by the way they relate to others.”

— Simone Weil

I ask myself: how can we turn our backs on someone who is hungry? How can we judge such a tragic situation, especially when it affects children? How can we dare, with endless arrogance, believe we are better than anyone else?

A person who thinks this way may attend church every Sunday, participate in spiritual centers every day, and pray countless rosaries, yet still remain very far from God.

Charity is a divine principle and a daily practice. It may mean donating money, sharing knowledge, or offering time. Giving what another person needs draws one closer to God.

The Spiritual Meaning of Social Justice

Sadly, politics has taken possession of charity, which should live eternally in our hearts. When politics takes over this discourse, it creates either strong agreement or strong rejection, because charity becomes associated with party positions. That is a dangerous trap.

The well-being of society should be the priority of those in power, and demanding that what must be done be done is our duty.

A Spiritual View of Collective Responsibility

Political awareness is connected to spirituality. To build a more human society, we must deepen the liberating political dimension of spirituality. The more mystical or religious we become, the more our spiritual search should appear in the way we practice citizenship and social responsibility.

Whether by helping those in need or by correcting the State’s failures to create opportunities, social movements are important.

Unfortunately, we often see financial and personal interests placed above the common good. Those who move masses in the name of the collective good have not always done so sincerely, and corruption has damaged these values. At the same time, those who oppose income distribution and assistance policies often fall into the trap of those who use corruption as political and rhetorical capital.

Corruption is Everywhere, throughout the world. Do Not be Deceived.

Even in more developed countries, where social justice is more visible, and health care and education may be available to all, much of this has been built on the exploitation of poorer nations, pushing their populations deeper into misery to sustain the appearance of justice.

The system, sadly, has been taken over. Politics is often sustained by private interests. There are no saviors.

But we, as citizens, can do our part, at least when we are called to do so.

Do not look away or ignore those who suffer.

And above all, do not judge.

Help with all your heart.

Can Social Movements Be Spiritual?

Fortunately, there are still people who think of others. Some social movements manage to meet needs that the State fails to reach. For that reason, they are deeply important.

Thinking collectively. Collective Responsibility is far more spiritual than many may imagine. Even when it inevitably touches politics. Liberating spirituality and social struggles are not separate realities. They complement each other in every sense.

This liberating spirituality is what connects genuine social movements to pure Goodness. Beyond the awareness that human rights must be guaranteed, there is also the certainty that God manifests in the struggles of the people.

Whoever stands against life stands against the divine commandments.

Whoever cannot see others with mercy and empathy acts out of selfishness and personal interest, revealing a hardened, rudimentary spirit.

The greater the spirituality and the higher the awakening of consciousness, the more love becomes the only thing that truly makes sense.

And it is love that moves charity.

Collective Responsibility, Unconditional Love, and Charity

In our time, with hatred and ignorance taking over so many political narratives, Jesus would probably be rejected. He preached on behalf of the impoverished, challenged the authorities of his time, and walked with the marginalized.

The same can be said of capitalism. In theory, it is based on the production of wealth accessible to all. In reality, because of human greed, it has become one of the great engines of poverty and inequality.

This proves an important point: politics made by people living in darkness is doomed to fail, regardless of the ideology that sustains it. As long as power continues to place human life beneath its own interests, no political proposal can truly succeed.

When Compassion Becomes a Movement

A defender of the oppressed would have little space in today’s world. Someone who taught that one must abandon material possessions in order to follow him would be mocked and attacked.
Feeding people experiencing homelessness and people with low income has become, in the eyes of some, almost a mortal sin.

The politics of Jesus was love, especially love for the oppressed and those excluded from society. This love was unconditional. It was not tied to ethical, religious, or moral conditions. Every person had dignity. Every person. His message is forgiveness, unconditional love, and charity.
