Stimulate Your Baby’s Senses

All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses. ~  Friedrich Nietzsche

Human beings are little sense machines from the moment of our conception. We can sense warmth, hunger, love, or deprivation.  Actually, from our incipiency, we have infolded within us all of the abilities and virtues that we will eventually unfold. Knowing this, wouldn’t you love to learn newborn stimulation to encourage your baby and her senses along the pathways of good?

Reaching Out to Your Baby’s Senses

The first five senses of hear, see, touch, taste, and smell can be stimulated and those senses can begin to unfold keener sensitivities even before your baby is born. The last two senses of reason and understand do not unfold until after the child’s ability to reason begins around age seven.

Touching your belly, rubbing it with oils or lotions, will have a calming effect on the baby, and it will be all ready for such soothing when it’s born, which will make it easier on you to encourage the baby to sleep.  And have the baby’s daddy and siblings join in the touching and talking too. The baby will sense the love.

Touching your newborn after it is born is essential to the baby’s feeling loved and cared for. Horrible stories of children left untouched in orphanages who pass on because they are not touched just tear at my heart. Touch is so essential to a baby!

Your baby can hear you!  While still in your womb, your voice becomes familiar to your baby. Soothing music can also salve her little soul.  Be careful not to get into arguments within earshot of your tummy during pregnancy.  Your baby can hear you. This is why humming or lullabies works so well.

You can even begin to read stories to your baby in utero. If the baby’s movements become erratic over some of the music you play, be sensitive and change it to something more soothing. Babies respond well to the types of classical music that is not clashing symbols! Babies learn to love the sounds that animals make.  You could begin this early on, also.

It’s been thought that the cravings you experience during your pregnancy might be the baby’s way of letting you know what she likes! If you eat a wide variety of flavorful foods, it would be interesting to watch the baby’s reaction. It’s said that by the baby’s fifteenth week of life, it can taste and smell.  Your baby will begin to associate you with the fragrance you wear after it is born and will generally love the smell of you as much as it loves the you of you.

Many pediatricians will encourage you to start slowly to introduce a wide variety of mashed fruits and vegetables, watching carefully for the baby’s reaction. I know of a story told be a woman who had a sense of flavor from baby food that had been offered to her as a toddler. She loved whatever it was but that particular food was not in her family’s regular meal offerings. As a young woman, she finally got satisfaction.  The baby food was white clam chowder. She was happy to be re-united with that loved flavor from her childhood!

If a bright light is shined at your belly (this is NOT recommended!) after the 26th week of pregnancy, blinking can be detected in your baby’s eyes, as amazing as that might seem. If you work to attune the baby to a regulated sleep cycle by darkening the area away from a light source, and singing lullabies, many mothers can detect their baby’s responses to see if it’s working or not.  Your baby will not be able to detect color until after its birth.

Having a baby is a wonderful experience and creates great joy for the parents, grandparents and friends of the happy couple.  Using the newborn stimulation ways mentioned here are ways to add joy to the baby’s experience as well.
