Dear Whitedove,
My father’s grandmother was a considered an eccentric lady. She once expressed to the family that she was born with a veil over her face which gave her the ability to see dead people. Can you explain exactly what she meant by the “veil” that gave her this special power?

Dear Curious,
Your great grandmother was a Medium, and all natural born Mediums are marked by God in some fashion. In days of old, when babies were born with a “caul membrane” covering the head and face this was referred to as being born with a veil. Midwives knew that the child was blessed and marked as a seer. Today, midwives still witness these special births. In contemporary medical terms, the caul is a fetal membrane that encloses the amniotic sac. During most births either the mother’s water breaks at the onset of labor or later the sac is purposely broken by a doctor or nurse. This means that the amniotic sac usually ruptures pre-birth. To be born with caul, the baby is delivered with the amniotic sac intact and pulled tight across the face, completely enveloping the head. Being born with the veil or caul is rare and is always a clear sign that the child is special and a gifted Medium. Caulbearer’s are known to have a Saint-like mission on Earth.
