Defeat Insomnia, A Complete Natural Healthcare Guide to Insomnia and Other Sleep Disorders

Sleep away,  defeat insomnia

There’s a common myth that insomnia means complete sleeplessness, where a person lies awake all night unable to relinquish consciousness. That’s true in extreme cases but insomnia comes in a variety of guises. For instance, difficulty falling or staying asleep, waking up too early, or tripping off to the toilet in the wee small hours, are all forms of insomnia because they disrupt the essential sleep program. Luckily, there’s a new book about that is sure to put you to sleep.

That’s not to say its boring literature; it’s actually the author’s goal. The latest book from health journalist, activist and author, Jeanette Leigh, and natural therapist, Monica Jane Shalit, Defeat Insomnia, A complete Natural Healthcare Guide to Insomnia and other Sleep Disorders, offers timely advice on preventing and overcoming the myriad of sleep challenges without a single sleeping pill passing your lips.

Sleep is an amazing process that keeps us quietly, very busy. Our sleeping brain regulates and rejuvenates all of our systems; gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and immune.

And just like a computer defrags all the bits and bytes, your brain reorganizes itself so it can function well the next day.

A night not slept well, affects memory, concentration, creativity and our ability to use words. Did you know that after five nights of partial sleep deprivation, three alcoholic drinks will have the same effect on your body as six would when you’ve had enough sleep?

So if you want to get doubly high without the fiscal cost, don’t go to bed.

Insomnia is a major public health problem. Left unchecked, the consequences can be dire. Studies show that insomniacs are more than twice more likely to experience congestive heart failure than those who sleep well, and five times more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression. Insomnia may also be a risk factor in numerous psychological disorders. A recent study, conducted by a research team in the Netherlands, tracked heart disease and strokes in more than 14,000 people for over a decade. By the end of the study, approximately 600 people had suffered heart disease or stroke, and 129 died.

The study found that deaths were less likely in people who followed all four positive lifestyle recommendations – exercising, eating healthily, moderate alcohol consumption, and not smoking. Observing these behaviors was associated with a 57% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 67% lower risk of dying from stroke or heart disease. Interestingly, when having appropriate sleep was added to the picture (7 or more hours), the beneficial effect was amplified and the death rate from cardiovascular disease was 83% lower.

A perennial question for us all is; what does it take to have good health? We can visit the doctor and amass the medication, or we can think about what we could do differently to solve the problem permanently. Hypocrites said 2,473 years ago that “our natures are the physicians of our disease”. If he got that way back then, how come we don’t get it now? Following suit with the father of modern medicine, Monica Jane Shalit and Jeanette Leigh, encourage you to get to the heart of your sleep issues, and where possible, deal with the initial stressors. So Defeat Insomnia provides an abundance of great advice including examining our priorities, dealing with stress responses, contemplating our values and assessing how appropriate our goals are. “Nurturing the self and connecting with nature gives us a greater chance of sleeping better and remaining healthy,” says Monica.
