The 3 Biggest Fashion Myths that Most Women Still Believe

by Carol Tuttle

Take a second and look at what you’re wearing right now.

What colors do you see?

If you’re like most women, you’re probably wearing black somewhere on your body: pants, shirt, jacket or coat, shoes, socks—or even your mascara or eyeliner.

But get curious for a moment: Why did you put this color on?

Were you trying to look more professional? Maybe trying to appear a bit slimmer? Or maybe it’s your quick go-to color because it easily goes with everything, right?

If you said yes to any of these, then you’ve bought into some of the fashion industry’s biggest myths. And they aren’t supporting your true Type of beauty!

Don’t get me wrong. Black is a great color—but only on the right Type of woman!

So let’s debunk these three fashion myths once and for all and find out why thousands of women are ditching their black clothes and feeling great about it!

The 3 Biggest Fashion Myths

Fashion Myth #1: Black is a neutral color that goes with everything. Every color on the color spectrum has a different energetic quality and the color black is actually a very saturated, very still and very bold color.

Wearing pure black makes a bold statement—nothing neutral about that! (The same is true for pure white, too, but that’s a topic for another time).

Fashion Myth #2: Black is slimming on everyone. Not at all. Since black is such a still, stark color, it can actually make you look bigger than you are. But it’s not just about how you look, it’s how it makes you feel. For me and my high-energy nature, black weighs me down. So if I put on a black garment, I immediately feel 10 pounds heavier!

Fashion Myth #3: Every woman looks good in black. I often say to women, “If you want to look 10 years older and 10 pounds heavier, just wear black.” (Of course, the exception is women who express TYPE 4 beauty). Before French fashion designer Coco Chanel inspired the “little black dress” trend, black was reserved strictly for mourning—it was not at all associated with trendy styles, formal fashion or professional wear.

But can you take a wild guess at what Type of beauty Coco Chanel was? Yep, you got it. Coco Chanel expressed a bold, striking Type 4 beauty—the only one of the 4 Types that looks stunning in black. No wonder she was such a fan of the “little black dress!”

But if I don’t wear black, what will I wear? I hear this question from countless women. In the Dressing Your Truth online course experience, you’ll learn which versions or alternatives of black are best for your Type of beauty.
