All You Get is a Watch?
by Gia Dalton
Are You Following Your Life Purpose?
Someone once said that after thirty years of service the only thing they received at retirement was a watch. This conversation has been repeatedly spoken. Imagine working thirty years and feeling that a watch was the sum total of all that time and effort? All you get is a watch. Many people don’t even get that. They are lucky to get a party and a cake. How very sad to live a life not realized.
God did not put us on this earth for that. We may not be sure why He did put us here. But we know it isn’t for a watch. In order to find or reveal our life purpose we need to do what we feel passionate about, not just one time, but every day. Leaps of faith and risk-taking can ultimately lead us to our life purpose. Our divine destiny. Which is why it’s so important to invest time and effort in more than one direction, careful not to put all our eggs in one basket. Are you determined to find out what your passions are? What will lead you to greater fulfillment?
Life Purpose May Mean More than a Watch
We often wonder where we will be in five, ten or twenty years. Our vision includes happiness, joy, and laughter. We are surrounded by family and friends. Helping others, volunteering, giving from our heart. We feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. Something inside, that is immaterial. Never once do we see ourselves as the proud recipient of a watch. The watch, even if it is a Rolex would hardly make thirty years of service to a passionless profession worthwhile.
An older woman once said, “I wonder what my life would have been like if I had made other choices…what it would have been like to have a loving husband, and done something I enjoyed.” She pondered those questions and came to this conclusion.” My husband really wasn’t very nice. I always dreamed of teaching dance. Now I am 79 years old.”
How sad that after all those years, she came to a conclusion her family had come to long ago. Had she stepped into that moment years ago her life and the lives of her children would have been profoundly changed and altered. Everyone would be different. Her husband passed away. He died three days before his retirement. Ironically, he never got the watch, the party or the cake. Perhaps somewhere in his being, in a place only he knew, he was keenly aware of his short comings and this was his way out. His ticket out the door. But for her, she had regrets. She wished her life had been infused with more happiness, and she could have been who she had dreamt she would be.
Change and Wisdom Abound in All We Do
Changing anything from the past would undoubtedly change our direction and life path. Perhaps even our life purpose. The path we have traveled has provided us with valuable insight, contrast, clarity and ultimately wisdom. Wisdom that we can infuse into our work, and passions. The past has sculpted and fashioned us into who we are today. So change it? No. That would be futile.
However, today will be the past tomorrow. The choices we make today are important. At any age, we can change directions. It is never too late to start again. The 79-year-old woman went on to serve in her church and sponsor children in third world countries. She became a missionary, discovering passions she never knew she had.
Eager to Learn? Forget “Watching” Time
We come to into this life experience bursting with questions and lessons to learn, eager to experiment. There are paths we are meant to follow. If we choose not to, they usually come back around, presenting themselves at a later date, disguised as something else. The answers and the experiences are brilliantly designed, aligned and created for our growth and expansion to a higher spiritual consciousness. A collective consciousness. We are not supposed to know the answers to questions that haven’t been asked yet, although for many of us, intuitively we already know.
Will there be a watch at the end of your career? Maybe, but not just a watch, as we will never be finished…. We cannot get it wrong and it will never be done. After every answered question, another will come. After each experience, another will follow. Nothing completed or accomplished can be seen as a matter of arriving. We are eternal beings, yet we are already here, and here is all there is.
