The Spirituality of Loyalty

loyality_OMTimes

Most people agree loyalty means a strong allegiance and support for another or a group of individuals. Trust can be a tenuous thing. A spiritually minded soul can be loyal to a fault as they consider it a must for any alliance they make. The challenges in our evolution are how we evolve our loyalties as we grow into our best selves. How do we discern between what is best for us and what is best for someone else without appearing disloyal to the past?

Josiah Royce presented his definition of the concept in his 1908 book, The Philosophy of Loyalty. According to Royce, “Loyalty is the heart of all the virtues, the central duty amongst all the duties.” The short definition he gives of the idea is that loyalty is “the willing and practical and thorough going devotion of a person to a cause.” He emphasizes “loyalty is thoroughgoing in that it is not merely a casual interest but a wholehearted commitment to a cause.”

Different Types of Loyalty

Family loyalties are generally the strongest. This is why we have such a difficult time breaking ties from our relatives who may be emotionally, and in many other ways, abusive. The behavior is tolerated because of misplaced trust and fear. In matters of love, money and religion, loyalties can change dramatically over the course of our lifetimes.

If we are to raise our energetic vibrations to a more peaceful and loving existence on this planet, trust is imperative in working together for the good of humanity. We learn to change our alliances to fit our needs for survival of mind, body and soul. People, places and situations evolve as we mature. Our outlook on life and what we want to accomplish are greatly tied to our loyalties, not only to others, but ourselves as well. Loyal to our purposes and promises, we have to make decisions that help us maintain our way of life.

Someone with low self-esteem may be reckless with their loyalties because they are constantly seeking approval and acknowledgment. Friendships are difficult because their anxiety keeps them from being able to stick around for long as they continue on the quest for acceptance. You might be able to count on them for a short time, but ultimately they will move on looking for someone to fulfill their needs as they can honestly have no understanding of yours. This survival mode of short-lived friendships can either be a catalyst for growth in learning to sustain relationships or a reason to become more withdrawn out of distrust.

Misguided Loyalty

We can become so misguided in our loyalties towards others because we are seeking approval. Friendships, marriages, alliances and a host of other partnerships have imploded because of the human need to be loved, plus approved of, by an outside force. People will let you down because of your expectation; they will fill a need that is really yours to fill. If we learn early on how to love ourselves, with all our imperfections and ridiculous demands on what life should be, we will no doubt be much happier.

Loyalties can cause great sacrifice and impose a real burden to someone who does not understand the fluidity of this life and how paths are chosen. As our lives grow, we gather more things, people and places to draw from. We can become weighed down with responsibilities and decisions. Our loyalties might seem to come and go with the new fashions of the season. There are so many people and so many possibilities that it becomes a fantastic journey of choice.

Loyalty, and Trust

So, as we evolve these human brains into the beauty of the spiritual consciousness, let’s all remember how miraculous we are. Let go of the judgment we put on ourselves and trust more in us. Be loyal to you and those who are meant to be in your life will manifest more magic. Rid yourself of those who keep you around, but aren’t one bit loyal to your life story or your dignity. Quit trying to prove anything to those who are too busy trying to prove how amazing they are. To them, you may just be the soup of the day, but not for a lifetime.

Remember that your spiritual connections never tune you out for someone else. The Universal consciousness will never judge your amazing self. The most spiritual thing about loyalty is deep inside your very heart. When we join together in that knowledge, we can join together as a collective in love and trust for the better of humanity.
